Cartier-Bresson Image Critique

Photo 1 critique: The reason that I picked this photograph is because it was the first one that made me stop out of pure interest. This photograph is incredibly striking to me. The person is captured so beautifully in motion. The perfect reflection in the water below is truly what caught my attention. It looks like the person is walking on water. The fact that the focal point is left skew of center attracts my eye immediately. The composition of the photograph perfect. Nothing in the photograph is static. It all fits and everything seems to have a purpose. The position of the gate along with its reflection makes for a really interesting background subject. The sky along the silhouette of the buildings give a possibility of fog, adding an element of intensity. The many different tones of grays and blacks adds a sense of mystery, sadness even. The blurriness of the person also adds mystery. Because of the blur, the viewer is given no characteristics of the person. It is merely more of a silhouette.

The photograph as a whole leaves me with an immense feeling of curiosity. Where is the person running to? Why are they running? Why are they going to jump into a puddle, is this on purpose or an accident? I wonder how deep the water is and what the object in the water is. The focal point never leaves my mind, even when I am viewing other parts of the photograph. The mood is this picture to me is eagerness. The intense motion in this picture makes me feel this way. While the mood in this picture gives me a sense of eagerness, this picture also makes me feel like time is standing still. A moment of movement, frozen in time.
